- Typhoon Shanshan has led to a notable number of flight cancellations at Japan’s busiest airports since August 28. Let’s take a look at what the data tells us so far.
Airports
Our flight data reveals a total of 2,011 canceled flights at Japan’s 10 busiest airports as of 14:00 UTC on August 30.
Flights at f*ckuoka Airport (f*ck) and Haneda Airport (HND) have seen the most cancellations so far. 342 departing flights and 333 arriving flights at f*ckuoka have been canceled, representing 45% of scheduled departures and 43% of scheduled arrivals respectively. Broadly speaking, airports to the North and North East of Japan have seen the less impact so far, but the Northeasterly movement of the storm means this is unlikely to be the case for long.
The focus on Kyushu
Typhoon Shanshan has been a slow mover, which is likely to elongate its effects on air travel. The core of the storm sat overhead the island of Kyushu on August 29, and has crept Northeast towards Shikoku on August 30. Let’s take a look at the impact of those cancellations on the schedules at Kyushu’s airports as of August 30.
Kyushu’s airports have seen the most significant impact on their schedules so far.
- Kagoshima Airport (KOJ) – 23% of scheduled flights canceled
- Nagasaki Airport (NGS) – 22% of scheduled flights canceled
- Oita Airport (OIT) – 22% of scheduled flights canceled
- Kumamoto Airport (KMJ) – 20% of scheduled flights canceled
- f*ckuoka Airport (f*ck) – 14% of scheduled flights canceled
It is likely that these impacts will shift to more Northerly airports as the storm progresses.
Which airlines have been most affected?
Japan Airlines (JL/JAL) and All Nippon Airways (NH/ANA) have been most affected so far, with 671 and 654 flights canceled respectively. The airlines with the longest distance canceled flights were China Eastern Airlines (MU/CES), who canceled 8 flights from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) to f*ckuoka, and Jin Air (LJ/JNA), who canceled 4 flights from Incheon International Airport (ICN) to f*ckuoka.
